Misfire

I know why and yet I don’t know why.  Weren’t we all taught to aim, check your breathing, your bearings, be alert and understand the circumstances before squeezing the trigger? Maybe the target was too bright and it continued shining after the first salvo, or maybe its fortitude and resilience similarly prevented it from falling the first time round. But whatever the excuse, the fundamentals were not observed, the firing assistants did not check (or did they?) and the result is crystalline to all who can see - it was a misfire.
