Because I don’t play dota. Because it’s the only game in town. Because I have been christened MVSC king by Auggie (thanks man). And because I actually did work today and hence do not wish to blog about work, love, or anything other than the art of happy sprites dancing around on a two dimensional terrain spewing stuff like ‘Here’s my sunday best! Proton Cannon!’.
This is no FAQ. Just a little something for shawn, david, dim, thambi and whoever is or was kinda interested in the game, be it a superficial one and would like just a wee bit of knowhow to kick everyone else’s asses. AKA, How To Air Combo. My knowledge of mvc1 is juvenile and inadequete compared to what I can offer on xmen vs streetfighter or marvel vs capcom 2 but I thought I’d just share, I mean in case anyone’s bored studying and wants to play on their coms or sth. Shrugs. Don’t scoff. I know the fighting game genre’s dead and I’m living a lie playing marvel seriously. But indulge me. Just because? Thanks ah. haha.
Anyway.
The air combo is practically the same thing in all VS games (mvc1, xvsf etc etc): a series of hits in the air after a launcher And here I’ll outline how to do it. Whee.
1) Launch and Super Jump
Every character has a launcher, ie a move that sends the opponent into the air. Examples of this includes Ryu’s crouching heavy punch (c.hp), Wolverine’s/Chun Li’s/War Machine’s standing heavy kick (s.hk). You know it’s a launcher because once you tap up after the move, your character immediately super jumps (a jump high in the air). Spiderman’s launcher is different, but I’ll get into that later. You normally put in a couple of light/medium attacks before any launcher, such as crouching light kick (c.lk) etc. (see examples below)
2) Magic Series
The layout of buttons, or keys on the keyboard follow this pattern in any of the VS games.
Light Punch (LP) Medium Punch (MP) Heavy Punch (HP)
Light Kick (LK) Medium Kick (MK) Heavy Kick (HK)
The magic series is basically a cheem way of saying a 4 hit series of LP LK MP MK.
And in essence, that’s your air combo right there. A launch, into the magic series (lp,lk,mp,mk). The timing for the series is very flexible. You don’t have to press the buttons incredibly fast, but don’t do it too slowly too.
3) AC Finisher
A fierce way of saying a heavy attack (HP/HK), a special (hadouken, webswing etc) or super (shinku hadouken etc etc)
Basically an AC Finisher (air combo finisher) is any move that knocks your opponent down, ending the air combo. Sounds duh right. haha.
So there you have it: How to do an air combo in mvc, and the vs series in general-
launch -> superjump -> lp, lk, mp, mk -> hp/hk/special/super.
And here are some examples, using the standard notation with the extended notation below.
Wolverine:
c.lk c.mp s.hk, sj, sj.lp lk mp mk, uf. drill claw
(crouching light kick, crouching medium punch, standing heavy kick (launcher), superjump (tap up), super jump light punch, light kick, medium punch, medium kick, drill claw (light kick + medium punch) while holding up forward.
You can replace drill claw with any other AC finishers such as heavy punch or heavy kick.
Ryu:
c.lk c.hp, sj, sj. lp lk mp mk , hadouken
c.lk c.hp, sj, sj lp lk shinkuu hadouken
(crouching light kick, crouching heavy punch (launcher), super jump (tap up), super jump light punch, light kick, medium pucnh, medium kick, hadouken (Quarter circle forward + punch – down, forward + any punch).
You can omit the medium punch and medium kick and immediately do a shinkuu hadouken instead (quarter circle forward + 2 punches).
Spiderman:
c.lk c.mk s.hk, sj, sj.lp lk mp mk, web swing
(crouching light kick, crouching medium kick, standing heavy kick (launcher), super jump (tap up), super jump light punch light kick medium punch medium kick, web swing (Quarter circle back + any kick – down, back +kick)
Spiderman has a weird launcher (s.hk) in the sense that the move can’t launch someone on its own, unlike other characters’ launchers. You have to chain the light and medium kicks prior to that, so your opponent will be at the correct height for s.hk to actually send the character into the air. yup.
K that pretty much covers how to air combo. Some other misc things and how to do them:
Calling your assist: medium punch + medium kick. How to select your assists.
Switching character: heavy punch + heavy kick
Duo Attack (where both characters are on screen for a period of time): Half Circle Back + Heavy Punch + Heavy Kick (forward, down, back +hp+hk)
Duo Super (where both characters do their supers): Half Circle Forward + Heavy Punch + Heavy Kick (back, down, forward +hp +hk)
Changing Ryu into Akuma: (With 1 level or more), Half Circle Back + Heavy Punch
Changing Ryu into Ken: (With 1 level or more), Half Circle Back + Medium Punch
‘Tian’ (When in Akuma Mode): (With 3 levels), Light Punch, Light Punch, Tap Forward, Light Kick, Heavy Punch.
YUP.
I’m studying for my exams, I talk to girls, I have a life, I do not live in my mom’s basement, I am not crazy.
I’m just helpful.
“hyper combo finish!!”
