I was flipping through the ACS School Magazine of 1998 today in all its dusty glory and came across a picture that made me guffaw, hack and cough. Or maybe that was the dust. Anyway it depicted two young boys (gasp), in full costume with faces heavily rouged and made up (gasp!!) facing each other with mouths wide open (g to the a to the s to the p)…. in front of two microphones, a part of the Chinese New Year skit that the primary three boys put up as a part of the festivities. Ha.
The caption read ‘The King refuses to listen to the Wizard’. I was the wizard. And Kah Chee was the king. hahahahaha. To spare further gory details, it was one of the first school performances I was involved in during the glorious JS days. In chinese some more! woo hua yu cool. But yeah, there were may more skits and the like to follow, but mostly the 5.10/6.10 ones give the best memories Highlights include playing Romeo’s (TP) Juliet, with my trusty chick hairdresser (Imran) for the 2000 Courtesy Skit competition. Ah the perils of an all boys education. Sigh.
But if there’s anything that the acting experience (albeit an androgynous one) in JS gave me, it’s the chance to audition, at the end of P6 for a role on television, and gain the experience of acting in front of a camera. I must stress that I didn’t become an actor, an artiste or the like. Rather all I did was to learn the ropes, and gain the experience of being on tv. The experience has been humbling, eye opening, revealing and exhilarating. I think that what I learnt, on and off camera has impacted the way I look at things even to this day, and I’d share these glorious ruminations right now if it wasn’t 12:32 am and I’m sleepy even after drinking two cups of coffee within the space of 5 hours today.
I swear I’ll need espresso shots pretty soon. As in the ones requiring syringes rather than glasses. Ugh.
Anyway stay tuned! (HAHA)
